If you haven't noticed the huge trend towards home improvement in the past few years, you've been living under a rock. Reality TV shows are based on it, marketing campaigns make their year's revenue from it and endless homebuyers have followed it's lead. If you've decided to jump on the bandwagon, and we know you have, you've quickly learned that home improvement is a time-consuming project. But when it's all said and done, fixing up your home enhances its market value. Haven't you been looking for a way to catch the envious eye of your neighbors and improve the overall attitude of your spouse?
Indoor Plans?
Bathrooms. If you have a limited budget and are planning to remodel your bathroom, think about what items are most important to you. Do you want a bigger tub, a two-headed shower stall, two sinks, new tile or skylights? In the long run, remodeling your little bathroom can lead to not-so-little costs. Budget according to how these categories rank in your head and start from there.
Interior Design. Depending on your taste, redecorating your home could be expensive. There are ways to make your house the best it can be without spending an arm and a leg. Start with the feel you want for your room, and then decide on a color palette. There are all kinds of ways to treat your walls, whether it's painting or wallpapering. There are kits available at your local home supply stores, and often you can attend a few classes to learn new techniques. If you want your rooms to display an element of luxury, bring out all those items you've been saving for a special event and make them the focal point of the room. You can cut on costs and not results by just doing a little research.
Outdoor Plans?
Landscaping. This is an area that may not make leaps in improvement initially, especially when you're planting things for next season or year. Don't be afraid to be a copycat-isn't that the best form of compliment? Pictures and other lawns can help you improve your own landscape. Keep in mind that you may not be living in this house forever, and that not every landscaping project you undertake will be aesthetically pleasing to the next owner.
Adding a Deck. Sure it's expensive and gives you a decade's worth of splinters, but how else can you enjoy summer nights and barbeques? If you've got those carpentry skills, the right tools and a month's worth of weekends free, then you're already halfway there. If you've never really been that wood-savvy, then now's probably not a good time to start. Research general contractors in your area, and get them to come out to measure your property and give estimates. From there it's easier to know how much you're going to spend, and what kind of deck you'll want.
Swimming Pool. Who doesn't love taking a refreshing dip in the middle of the summer? Outdoor pools come in three basic types: above ground, in-ground vinyl and in-ground concrete. More decisions need to be made to suit your tastes. What kind do you like? Is this going to be a lap pool? What size and depth are you thinking about? Will there be a deck attached to it? Do you want a diving board? Pool maintenance is also important and will take up a lot of your time in the on and off months. But if you're ready to make the commitment, swimming pools are a great home improvement project that will satisfy those of all ages.
